It’s not always easy to make a practical three-row SUV look interesting and desirable because they have to be reasonably long for obvious reasons. However, the designers at Cadillac have borrowed some of the best styling cues from smaller models in the current family and used them to make the 2021 Cadillac XT6 a real stunner. The overall silhouette is a classic three-row crossover, but the front fascia gives the XT6 a modern, ruggedly elegant look that really does distinguish it from its bigger brother.
Perhaps the biggest news about the 2021 Cadillac XT6 is the introduction this year of a turbo-four engine for the first time. You’ll find this new engine as the standard unit in the entry-level XT6 Luxury where it sends its 237 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. That’s right, here in Canada all versions of the XT6 are standard all-wheel-drive, but you can’t upgrade the XT6 Luxury to the other engine.
That other engine is a familiar 3.6-litre V-6 that develops 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque, which once again goes to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic. The V-6 is standard with the XT6 Premium Luxury and XT6 Sport models, so the only way to get the smaller engine if you are determined to take advantage of its superior fuel economy is to stick with the very nicely equipped base model.
In its standard form, the 2021 Cadillac XT6 comes with seating for seven people in three rows in a 2-3-2 configuration where the second-row is a 60/40 split-folding bench seat. On the other hand, if you don’t need to accommodate seven people and six seats will do you just fine you can swap the second-row bench in the Sport and Premium Luxury trims for a pair of Captain’s chairs.
All versions of the XT6 come with standard heated front seats and heated outboard second-row seats and an automatic heated steering wheel are standard with Premium Luxury and Sport versions of the midsize Cadillac.
The standard specification of the entry-level XT6 Luxury is impressive, to say the least, and a big focus on safety means the XT6 is one of the safest vehicles in its class at all levels. Standard XT6 Luxury features include leatherette seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 18-inch alloy wheels, no fewer than six USB ports, a sunroof, wireless smartphone compatibility and a power liftgate.
Thanks to the way the XT6 is designed and the number of advanced safety features that come standard with all models, the NHTSA has given it a full five-star rating for overall safety and the IIHS has given the Caddy its coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating. All models come with automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, an HD rear-vision camera and plenty more besides.
If you regularly need to transport six or seven people and a decent quantity of cargo regularly the 2021 Cadillac XT6 is a superb choice. It takes its luxury billing seriously with a wonderfully designed interior packed with the finest materials and the latest technology, but the XT6 is also a midsize SUV you’ll be extremely proud to have parked outside your home.
