When you first set eyes on the 2022 Cadillac XT5 it can be easy to assume that it’s just a moderately bigger version of its little brother, but there’s more you need to know about the XT5 than its exterior and interior dimensions. Even the model lineup may be reasonably similar to Cadillac’s smallest SUV, but the XT5 offers buyers a bit more choice along with more interior space, and there’s extra performance available too. If you want to get up to five of you around North York, Markham, Richmond Hill, or anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area the XT5 is a stylish, powerful, capable, and luxurious way to do it.
The three XT5 trim levels that are available don’t follow quite the same strategy as those of its subcompact sibling. Instead of the two top trims being priced the same, but one concentrates on luxury while the other favours sportiness, the three XT5 trim levels are different and all priced differently. The three trim levels are once again called Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport, but in the case of the XT5, the Sport trim is definitely the top-of-the-range model and is priced accordingly.
You do have a choice of engines when it comes to choosing the XT5 that’s right for you, but a lot of people are sure to be more than happy with the standard powerplant. The standard unit under the hood of Luxury and Premium Luxury versions of the 2022 XT5 is a 2.0-litre turbo-four that puts 235 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque at the Cadillac SUV’s disposal. If that doesn’t sound like enough for your liking you then have to opportunity to step up to a 3.6-litre V-6 that develops 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque. The V-6 is standard if you opt for the range-topping XT5 Sport, but the Premium Luxury can be upgraded from the standard turbo-four to the V-6 if you prefer.
Front-wheel drive is only standard or even available for the XT5 if you’re buying the base Luxury trim, but even then, you can upgrade to the extra capability of AWD if you are happy to pay a little more. XT5 Premium Luxury and Sport models get AWD as part of their standard specification, but every XT5 configuration sends the power from its engine to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
You’ve every right to expect a luxurious cabin with any vehicle wearing the Cadillac badge and the 2022 XT5 doesn’t disappoint in any way. But as well as the cabin being fitted out with the finest quality materials, there’s also a surprising amount of room and a ton of standard features that make the interior feel even more luxurious. Even the entry models come with standard 18-inch alloys, auto on/off headlights, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an 8-speaker premium Bose sound system and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Step up a level to Premium Luxury and you then get standard Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert and you also have the opportunity to further upgrade with options that are just not available for the entry-level Luxury version of the XT5. On top of that V-6 powerplant, the top-of-the-range XT5 Sport model includes Brembo front performance brakes and real-time damping suspension that seamlessly adjusts to road conditions by adjusting damping forces every two milliseconds.
The 2022 Cadillac XT5 has far more to offer than just a little more room inside than its little brother and it can be specified to an extremely high level if you want to go beyond the generously-equipped standard specifications. However, the entry-level Luxury trim more than lives up to its name and it really does offer the kind of value for money that’s not normally associated with luxury vehicles.
